Die Unterart Ceratotherium simum cottoni wurde bereits seit dem 20.6.1976, die Unterart Ceratotherium simum simum seit dem 24.4.1977, unter der Familie Rhinocerotidae spp. in Anhang I WA geschützt. Seit dem 15.3.1995 sind die Population Swazilands, seit dem 22.8.2005 die Population Südafrikas der Unterart Ceratotherium simum simum unter bestimmten Bedingungen nach Anhang II WA bzw. Anhang B EG geschützt.
