Die Unterart Moschus moschiferus moschiferus wurde bereits seit dem 20.6.1976 in Anhang I WA geschützt; sie wird aktuell nach Anhang A EG als Populationen von Afghanistan, Bhutan, Indien, Myanmar, Nepal und Pakistan unter Moschus spp. geschützt. Alle anderen Arten, Unterarten bzw. Populationen der Gattung Moschus spp. werden seit 28.06.1979 in Anh. II WA erfasst.
